1 in 6 couples experience infertility. Although this percentage has not changed in industrialized countries over several decades, the number of couples seeking medical assistance for this issue has increased. It has become much more acceptable to seek treatment, and there are more treatment options than ever before available in Canada.
There are many things to consider as you determine the path to parenthood that’s right for you. Throughout the process you will face factors that affect you physically, emotionally and financially. It is a unique and complex experience, and everyone’s timeline is different. When you are ready, the dedicated team of professionals at RCC Fertility will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to help you achieve your dreams of family.
General Timelines
Fertility is impacted by many factors. The general rule of thumb is that a woman under 35 years old who has been trying to get pregnant for a year, or a woman over 35 who has been trying for six months, should consult with a fertility specialist in Ontario. Experts also recommend that those patients who have had more than two miscarriages meet with a specialist. Many patients who have experienced pregnancy loss go on to have healthy pregnancies, but the losses may indicate a fertility problem.
When those having trouble conceiving experience the problem for more than three years without treatment, chances of spontaneous conception are 0% to 3% per month, depending on the cause(s) of infertility. 40-50% of cases are caused by female factors and 40-50% are attributed to male factors. The remaining cases fall into the unexplained infertility category.
A Reproductive Endocrinologist, or fertility specialist, is trained in diagnosing and treating fertility issues. Your RCC Fertility doctor can treat a range of conditions that may be affecting your fertility, including:
- Endometriosis
- PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
- Ovulation problems
- Repeated miscarriages
- Abnormalities of the uterus, fallopian tubes and/or ovaries
Infertility
If you have a partner, it’s important they attend the consult with a specialist. Male infertility issues affect approximately one-third of infertile couples. At RCC Fertility, common causes of infertility include erectile dysfunction, an inadequate number of sperm, low sperm motility, or abnormal shape (morphology) of sperm.
Lifestyle Factors
The day-to-day choices you make can have an effect on your fertility. Nutrition and exercise are key factors in preparing your body for conception and a healthy pregnancy. It is advised that you eliminate unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking and recreational drug use–not only for your overall wellness, but also for the detrimental effect such activities can have on your fertility.
If you and/or your partner are struggling with infertility, it’s time to meet with a fertility specialist. Contact RCC Fertility today to request your appointment at our centre!
